What is "It's a Breast Thing"

It's a Breast Thing event is held the first Tuesday of each October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It includes a presentation of the latest information on breast health, cancer prevention and treatment and a themed bra decorating contest whose winners are featured in the yearly It's a Breast Thing calendar.

Proceeds are directed to the It's a Breast Thing Non Profit Corporation for the support of women undergoing the diagnosis, treatment and survivorship of breast cancer.

The Story of "It's a Breast Thing"

During the summer of 2008, Dr. Carol Slomski, Director of Great Lakes Breast Care met with Suzi Wyman and Barb McKessy the owners of Ultimate Image & Esthétique to discuss an idea for an annual event to be held during October ( Breast Cancer Awareness Month). The purpose of the event was twofold: first - to provide information about breast health and all aspects of breast cancer screening, treatment and survivorship and the second was to bring women together in a friendly and fun atmosphere.

As part of the event a bra decorating contest was planned. Local businesses and individuals were invited to decorate a bra in the theme of their choosing to be displayed at the event. Those attending the event would vote for their favorite bra and the winning bras would be worn and displayed in the It’s a Breast Thing Calendar. Women from the community (the calendar girls) were invited to model the bras in the calendar. Proceeds from the calendar during the first two events were directed to the Care Free Medical and Dental Clinic to pay for mammograms and exams for women who could not otherwise afford them.

The first event was held in October, 2008 and featured Chef Eric Villegas cooking several of his signature dishes made with ingredients from the state of Michigan. During the demonstration the Chef wore a bra he had designed featuring small fans to wear while chopping onions. Also featured was Winalee Zeeb who led the attendees in a demonstration of Nia. Exhibitors included: Curves for Women, Breslin Cancer Center, Pathway to Pink, American Cancer Society, Creative Wellness, Branch Reflexology Institute, Genesis Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Breast Center of Lansing, Care Free Medical and Dental Clinic, Great Lakes Breast Care, Schuler Books and Music, Front Room and the Ultimate Image & Esthétique.

As the years have progressed It’s a Breast Thing has continued to grow and evolve. In the spring of 2011 Dr. Carol Slomski announced her plans to move from the Lansing area and the search began to fill a very important position. Dr. La Keeya Tucker was the keynote speaker at the 2010 event and when asked to join our team she graciously accepted.

In the summer of 2011 the three board members for It’s a Breast Thing Non Profit Corporation where chosen and are in the process of following our mission to donate money to community breast cancer patients with their out of pocket expenses during treatment.
